sleep experiment, attempt 2, week 1

Mon 25 April 2005 - Day 0

I had normal sleep again this morning, not knowing whether I was going to try the experiment again.
I got to work and as soon as Robin came in, he asked me how it was going. I told him that I failed miserably and he told me that he was succeeding admirably! Robin's log is here. His logging seems to be much more scientific than mine. Anyway, his enthusiasm inspired me to try again, although he did seem more fragile than usual at work today.
I attempted sleep at lunch time, but I don't think much happened. I had a good thirty minutes at home before going to the gym after work. I'm feeling fine now and it is 22:11pm now.
My plan this time round is to go for six thirty minute sleeps per day straight away rather than trying to build up to it.

Tue 26 April 2005 - Day 1

The 12:00am went fine. I made it to the 4:00am sleep but then when I woke up, I didn't get out of bed. I was dozing in and out until about 8:00am and now I feel very rough. I had to take my car to the garage today and then cycle the rest of the way to work. I have nowhere to sleep at lunchtime, because I normally sleep in the car. I think I'm in trouble! Maybe I can find a cupboard or something...
12:30pm: Robin kindly let me sleep at his house, which is within walking distance from the office. I woke ten minutes early and felt great!
16:00pm: Feeling a bit sleepy again, but I'm still at work. Following a strict schedule, I should really be having a nap now, but I've got to wait until I get home.
17:30pm: The fucking dickheads at the garage didn't bother to fix my window because they were 'far too busy' with other stuff. So what the fuck was the point of me booking it in then? I had to cancel other things this lunch time because I had no car too. Fine. I'll go somewhere else tomorrow. And hope that the seat doesn't get too wet. Oh, and it's probably good for everybody to avoid Greenbridge MOT centre in Swindon from now on.
18:00pm: Good nap and then went to the gym for an hour. 21:00pm: Another good half hour nap and then went shopping at Tesco's. I was surprised at the number of people shopping at around 10pm, actually.

Wed 27 April 2005 - Day 2

00:30am: Went to sleep until 01:00am. Messed around on the internet for a while, watched an episode of The Nightmare Man in my bedroom. 03:30am: Went for another half hour but failed to get out of bed when the alarm went off. Woke up automatically at 08:00am. Dammit.
I'm working at home today, so I should be able get a more even spread of naps today.
13:00pm: Went for another half hour but slept until 14:30pm. Dammit.
16:00pm: Just wasn't very tired so I couldn't sleep.
20:00pm: Dozed a little but still felt pretty wide awake.
21:50pm: Just finished a load of stuff for my job and I'm feeling pretty tired now. My next sleep isn't due until midnight. I think I'll go to the supermarket again and buy some bread. I've really got to focus on staying properly awake tonight. I think that maybe the key is to have something that I really want to do started before I get tired. That way, I don't have to think hard about what to do
One thing that I've found quite annoying so far is that most things stop outside the hours of 9am to 6pm and therefore there seems to be much fewer useful tasks that I can do outside of those hours. For example, I would like to get my car window sorted out. This seems to need me to leave my car at a garage during daylight hours, which is when I need it to go to work.
It would be so much easier to take it to a garage at 8pm, for example, and collect it at 2am. Is this a gap in the market? Perhaps this is the idea that will make me millions...

Thu 28 April 2005 - Day 3

Bloody hell. I went to bed at 12:15, overslept an hour, found it very difficult to move and thought, 'I'll just lie here a moment,' then woke up at 6am. Arse. I obviously need to try harder. I took my car to another garage at 8:30am, where the guy said that even though it's just a broken cable, the whole window motor probably needs replacing. It didn't seem like it will get done today, from his attitude. I hate people that work in garages.
Pretty good sleep at 12:00pm though.
Pretty good sleep at 16:00pm too.
Apparently, my car window is going to cost about one hundred and twenty pounds to fix. But they can't do it until Tuesday. At some point when I was cycling to the garage to pick my car up again, I must have ridden through a big patch of bird shit. And then I got it all over my jacket when I was putting the bike in the back of my car.
Went to the gym and did a mile in six minutes and one second, a new personal best! A bit peeved that I didn't beat six minutes though.
Pretty good sleep at 20:00pm.
Been doing some work for my job - some stuff that's been bugging me for a while. It's done so now I'm much happier.
The sleep is going well today, I just hope I get up after my midnight nap!

Fri 29 April 2005 - Day 4

Failed to get up and slept until 7am. Bugger it *again*! I think it's time for attempt three.
