Extra information |
I have a photocopy of her will.
The 1851 census for Haddenham shows her as 32 years old, living with her
father Thomas Ostler Drage (unmarried farmer of 279 acres), and her 31 year old
husband Robert Pate (partner in the farm), and their 4 month old daughter
Emily Drage Pate. This entry would imply her birth year as 1819/1820.
Her baptism is shown in the Haddenham public records as an afterthought at
the bottom of the page on which her sister Sarah Brandford's baptism is
shown on the same days as follows:
26th Mary 1823 - Elizabeth Drage - daughter of Mary Brandford - abode Haddenham - F. Sandford, curate.
It was a common practice in the case of illegitimate births, if the father was
known, to put the father's surname as a second forename for the child.
Significantly, her sister Mary Drage Brandford is treated in the same way and on
both their marriage entries, their father is listed as Thomas Drage, farmer.
However, for their other sister, Sarah Brandford, no middle name is shown on
the baptism and the abode is shown as Barnwell (which is in Northants).
Also, no Brandford is shown on the 1851 census for Haddenham.
So Mary Drage Brandford and
Thomas Ostler Drage never married and one has to
question whether Sarah Brandford was
Thomas Ostler Drage's daughter or the
daughter of another man as yet unknown.
